Cheshire A Cappella is a group of women of all ages and walks of life with one thing in common - we love to sing! It's well known that singing brings physical, psychological and emotional benefits; it reduces stress and increases feelings of wellbeing, it improves posture and breathing, boosts the immune system.... and it's a great way of meeting people and making new friends.
Here at Cheshire A Cappella we derive a huge amount of joy from singing together every week, working to practise and extend our repertoire of songs and improve our vocal and performance skills, and then going out to perform to a variety of different audiences. We are strictly an amateur chorus; most of us have never had singing lessons and many of us can't read music, but we work together in a supportive environment to achieve the best we can and have loads of fun along the way.
We sing in unaccompanied (a cappella) four-part harmony. Many of the arrangements we sing are in the barbershop style, where the melody is surrounded by harmonies above and below, creating wonderful natural overtones. Women with any voice range, from low to high, are able to find a suitable harmony part. Our repertoire varies from contemporary and pop to swing, jazz, ballads and songs from films and shows, together with some classic barbershop arrangements. Some of our songs are performed with choreography to enhance the overall musical presentation.
In 2016 we were delighted to appoint Kate Shipway as our musical director. Kate has extensive experience in directing both barbershop and non-barbershop choirs, as well as singing herself in barbershop quartets and the international touring choir, Sine Nomine.
We are a performing and competing chorus and are affiliated to the Ladies' Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS). Our major event of the year is the LABBS Convention which takes place annually in October, where we compete with up to 30 LABBS choruses from across the UK. We also take part in various local music festivals throughout the year, as well as performing at private and public events and staging our own annual show, usually in the run-up to Christmas.
We are based in Wilmslow, Cheshire and rehearse weekly on a Wednesday evening from 7.30pm to 10.00pm.
